my shapes, your words, their grey
21 October 19.00, D.Fab | 15 and 10 Eur
“My shapes, your words, their grey” is a piece about nuances and gaps, situated somewhere between the visual arts, performance and a lecture.
For Philipp Gehmacher grey is the most interesting colour in which all other colours vibrate. It is also the colour that obsessively appears in his recent work, as part of that engagement with language. He juxtaposes the Grauraum or greyspace with the black box of the theatre or the white cube of the visual arts.
In this performance Gehmacher uses his specific, richly gestural and powerfully expressive body language to create a characteristic space. Form, text, movement and the subtle use of Gérald Kurdian’s sound landscape result in an extremely effectual state of limbo.
This performance is part of the Homo Novus festival programme ‘Austrian Focus’.
About artist
Philipp Gehmacher lives in Vienna and works internationally. He is considered one of the most important figures in the contemporary European performance scene. His works on gesture, space and touch and the ability and inability of bodies to communicate have featured in numerous festivals and venues around the world.
Gehmacher studied at the London Contemporary Dance School and the Laban Dance Centre from 1993 to 1999, where he conceptualised his first choreographic works. In 2001 Gehmacher opened Tanzquartier Wien with his duet “good enough”, presenting his first full-length group piece ”mountains are mountains” two years later. His first cooperation with the influential American choreographer Meg Stuart – ”Maybe Forever” (2007) – was shown at more than forty international festivals and received the Special Award from the BITEF festival in Belgrade.
Recently Gehmacher’s choreographies are increasingly set in the domain between performance and exhibition, and his current focus is on objects and sculpture.
