Tonight, Lights Out!

David Weber-Krebs
12 November 22.00, Zirgu pasts | 10 and 7 Eur

For ten years now, we have all been turning out the lights together during the annual Earth Hour. In Tonight, Lights Out!, David Weber-Krebs does the same thing: not on a worldwide scale but with a group of sixty people in a theatre space. Hanging on the ceiling are the same number of light bulbs as there are spectators. Everyone is given one light switch that is linked to a lamp. Together you are part of an installation, which you control individually and collectively leading towards the moment where together you put out the lights.

Tonight, Lights Out! focuses on the creation of belief. The belief that by jointly carrying out a simple task you can truly change something. What will happen, together in the dark? This theatrical experiment investigates our capacity for democracy and presents a metaphor for ecological urgency.

About artist

Brussels based artist and researcher David Weber-Krebs creates situations engaging the spectator in a complex game between getting absorbed or merging with an art piece, and keeping his critical distance towards it. Be it by staging actors (ex. into the big world), a donkey (Balthazar), a minimalist sculpture (Performance, Robert Morris revisited) or a public space (Miniature), the form is ever reduced to its simplest expression. It becomes like a projection screen, inviting the spectator into a mode of active contemplation where meaning is not given but produced by the spectator. David collaborates on a regular basis with different artists and theorists and he teaches at different visual arts and performance academies.
